“Shade to Help Spread Our Wings”
Sermon given by Pastor Robb on July 19, 2026.
Continues this summer’s Finding Faith Off the Beaten Path sermon series.
Covers Deuteronomy 32:1-13 and Matthew 18:1-7.
A fairly common metaphor for understanding how God cares for us and helps us grow in the Bible is that of a mother bird watching over her chicks. There may be even more to this metaphor than we realize if we really reflect on our identity as chicks - having an extended time offered to learn and grow that allows both more advanced full maturation and closer bonding between generations (a scientific term expressing this is neoteny). Are we mainly tempted to rushing ahead and trying to prove how amazing we are and so the Kingdom must need us more than we need the Kingdom, or can we receive the chance to always be learning and growing under God’s care, humbly acknowledging our limitations and vulnerabilities, as a gift that actually helps our shared contributions to the Kingdom that God calls us to and supports us in?
